On 24th Sept 2026, the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) convened the 4th Edition of UIPE Voice to discuss “Powering Uganda’s Future: Regulation for a Reliable Power Sector,” bringing together engineering professionals and sector stakeholders to examine the role of electricity in Uganda’s economic transformation. It’s was ably moderated by Eng. Nelson Tashobya, CEO of AOT CONSULTING LTD. The discussion highlighted that achieving Uganda’s ambitious industrialisation and economic growth targets will require a reliable, affordable and sustainable power, supported by effective regulation, innovation and continued investment. Eng. Peter Kaketto of the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA), who was the main discussant of the topic, provided insights into the structure of Uganda’s electricity supply industry and the role of regulation in licensing, tariff-setting, compliance, consumer protection and ensuring quality and reliability of service. The discussion also reflected on the transition of electricity distribution operations from Umeme to UEDCL, including the operational and institutional challenges associated with managing a major transition while maintaining service delivery. Participants further explored Uganda’s future energy options, smart grids and the need to strengthen the sector’s capacity to meet growing electricity demand. The discussion underscored that reliable electricity is not only an engineering or technical concern, but a critical foundation for Uganda’s economic development, industrialisation and improved quality of life.
