After more than a decade of delays — construction began in 2013 — the 600 MW Karuma Hydropower Dam was finally commissioned in September 2024. The project faced technical defects, contractor disputes with Chinese firm Sinohydro, COVID-19 disruptions, and resettlement controversies affecting thousands of people. Its completion pushed Uganda's installed generation capacity past 2,000 MW, a major milestone toward the country's target of 52,000 MW by 2040.
