Umeme's 20-Year Concession Ends, UEDCL Takes Over Electricity Distribution – 2025

Media Releases August 09, 2026

On April 1, 2025, Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) officially took over electricity distribution from Umeme Limited, ending a 20-year concession that began in 2005. The government had decided in 2022 not to renew the agreement, citing high tariffs and low access rates. The transition involved a contentious buyout — the government paid Umeme $118 million to settle unrecovered network investments — and was followed by public complaints over worsening power outages under UEDCL's management.
